New research reveals that patients who discontinue blockbuster weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain shed pounds far faster than those who halt traditional lifestyle programs.
Findings released in a prominent health publication shows that while obese individuals often shed about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals buying such drugs need to be aware of the danger of quick weight regain when the treatment ends," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain suggests a reversion to original weight within about 18 months.
Comparing Approaches
The study, which looked at dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the outcomes of these new drugs with conventional dieting.
The team emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically experience a less rapid weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
Understanding the Fast Regain
Experts suggest the mechanism of the drugs accounts for the accelerated weight return.
The injections mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls appetite.
"Artificially providing the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and may also lessen sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Stopping of this hormone supplement means appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating far more likely."
A Lifelong Condition?
Medical guidelines suggest the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
Many experts argue that, considering the significant potential of relapse, the therapy is often ongoing.
This view is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "emphasize the persistent nature of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.
Patient Testimonies
Users who have stopped the jabs explain a sudden resurgence of hunger.
"It felt as if something that goes on and you become extremely hungry," said a patient.
This challenge is worsened if users have not developed sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Widespread Adoption
Survey data show that millions of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire remaining high.
- Adoption is higher among females compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
In conclusion, clinicians stress that while these medications are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent solution and maintained weight loss hinges on combined lifestyle support.
